Clustering

Circularis Biocluster

MARMADE has officially joined the Circularis BioCluster, a clustering initiative bringing together four Horizon Europe projects – VALORISH, ONE EARTH, PROMISEANG, and MARMADE – to strengthen collaboration and amplify the impact of bio-based innovation in Europe.

The Circularis BioCluster aims to foster joint communication, dissemination, and technical exchange among the participating projects. By working together, the partners seek to maximise visibility, engage wider audiences, and promote cross-sector collaboration in the field of sustainable resource valorisation.

The cluster partners share a common mission: to develop scalable and sustainable bio-based solutions that transform underutilised biological resources into high-value products for sectors such as food, feed, agriculture, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.

Through this collaboration, the projects will organise joint activities including workshops, webinars, communication campaigns, and knowledge exchange initiatives, while exploring opportunities for technical collaboration and scientific publications.

By joining the Circularis BioCluster, MARMADE strengthens its engagement with the European bioeconomy community and contributes to advancing circular and sustainable bio-based solutions across Europe.

Meet the Cluster Members

PROMISEANG

The project’s objective is to develop novel alternative proteins from marine underexploited sources (marine invertebrate and macroalgae discards and industrial biowastes) through biomass fermentation (solid-state and submerge processes), generating new microbial protein biomass, meeting market requirements for food, feed, and non-food (biomedicine, pharma and cosmetic) bio-based applications. A technically and economically viable biorefinery for microbial-based protein production will be demonstrated during the project, enabling higher production yields, reduced production periods, minimized environmental impacts, diminish the imports, and reduced production costs for proteins.

VALORISH

VALORISH aims to design and validate an innovative circular biorefinery that converts fish industry by-products into high-value bio-based compounds such as fish protein hydrolysates and fish oil. The project focuses on transforming fish processing waste into valuable ingredients for applications in food, health supplements, and food additives through sustainable and innovative technologies. By integrating advanced computational tools, fermentation processes, and comprehensive sustainability assessments,
VALORISH seeks to ensure a zero-waste approach where all residual materials are further valorised. The project will demonstrate these solutions at pilot scale while evaluating their environmental, economic, and social impacts, contributing to a more circular and sustainable bioeconomy.

ONE EARTH

The project aims to develop and evaluate innovative bio-based solutions for producing nutraceuticals, cosmetics, bio-adhesives, fertilizers, and aquaculture feed by leveraging residual animal biomass. ONE EARTH seeks to establish integrated circular value chains by valorising marine biomass for terrestrial applications and repurposing terrestrial biomass for aquaculture, fostering a sustainable and self-reinforcing carbon cycle.

MARMADE

MARMADE aims to develop sustainable, high-value bio-based food and feed ingredients from marine biomass, focusing on underutilised crustacean residues (shrimp shells and blue crabs) and seaweed. The project seeks to establish efficient and scalable biorefinery processes to extract a wide range of functional ingredients and to develop innovative food and feed prototypes with enhanced nutritional, functional, and sensory properties.
