Objectives

Main objective

MARMADE is to develop a portfolio of innovative food and feed ingredients from marine biomass that are affordable, nutritious, safe, healthy and sustainable. Through the valorisation of shrimp shells, blue crab residues, and seaweed, MARMADE supports Europe’s transition toward greener food systems and reduced dependence on petrochemical-based ingredients.

To establish an integrated framework for sustainable biomass sourcing and utilization.

To develop and optimize comprehensive biorefinery processes for recovery of targeted building blocks from marine biomass, ensuring high-value nutrient extraction and side stream valorisation, downstream separation and purification from laboratory to pilot scale.

To develop innovative affordable food and feed ingredients from sustainably sourced bio-based feedstock, with targeted functionalities and validate in food and feed applications.

To acquire data, evaluate, and validate the nutritional quality, health benefits, and safety of developed food and feed ingredients, and to address regulatory requirements for targeted markets.

To ensure the environmental, social, and economic sustainability of MARMADE solutions.

To engage consumers, food and feed industry for market acceptance of new ingredients and implement the multi-actor approach (MAA) by involving all key actors in the value chains.

To secure broad visibility for the project, enhance awareness of bio-based food and feed ingredients, and promote the successful exploitation of project results.
