MARMADE research on greener extraction approaches for marine biomass valorisation was presented at GENP 2026 – Green Extraction of Natural Products, held from 28 to 30 October 2026 at Artificerie Almagià in Ravenna, Italy.

Representing the University of Camerino (UNICAM), MARMADE researchers contributed to the international scientific event through an oral presentation and a poster presentation, sharing their work on innovative extraction approaches and the potential of Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) for recovering valuable compounds from marine biomass.

Exploring greener extraction of valuable marine compounds

Elettra Della Ceca delivered an oral presentation entitled “From waste to value: ecofriendly astaxanthin extraction from Blue crab waste with Switchable Deep Eutectic Solvents.”

The presentation focused on the use of Switchable Deep Eutectic Solvents for extracting astaxanthin from blue crab waste, highlighting an innovative approach to investigating the recovery of valuable compounds from crustacean residues.

Claudia Pasqualini presented a scientific poster entitled “Novel Hydrophobic to hydrophilic switchable Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents for the extraction of Bioactive molecules from sea waste.”

Her contribution explored switchable Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents as an approach for extracting bioactive molecules from marine waste streams, contributing to research into alternative extraction methods for marine biomass valorisation.

Connecting MARMADE research with the scientific community

The event brought together approximately 120 participants, providing an opportunity to share MARMADE's research activities with an international scientific audience.

According to the UNICAM team, both presentations generated considerable curiosity and interest among participants, encouraging scientific exchange around innovative extraction approaches.

Prof. Matteo Tiecco from UNICAM also attended the event.

Through activities such as GENP 2026, MARMADE continues to disseminate its research and contribute to scientific discussions on more sustainable processing technologies and the circular valorisation of marine resources.
